There are three brands familiar to me back home that I have recently spotted in Brazil in unfamiliar settings: storefronts. Which brands? Clinique, Amway and Tupperware. Back home, Clinique is sold in department stores, not in its own stores. Unless something has changed since I moved.. Here, there is a Clinique store in Barra Shopping.
Amway is another brand sold here in its own stores. In Canada, it is sold under the Quixtar brand, generally out of people's homes but online more and more as time goes on, mostly because the word Amway is now synonomous with pyramid schemes.... anyhoo. Here in Rio, there is an Amway store on Rua Buenos Aires (loja 90 a) in Centro.
TUPPERWARE is the other brand normally sold out of homes, there is a Tupperware store across from Barra Shopping. Avenida das Americas 5001, Loja 106.
Normally, when a make up brand goes to an international location, they attempt to be "a part" of a store. It saves a lot of trouble with set up and such. But that´s not very easy to do in Brazil, especially Rio. Not to mention most of the boxes of product have 1/4 stolen by people in the mail/federal police system. That means the company either has to bump up prices or send privately, ie. bump up prices. It´s why there´s such a big mark up down here.

Think Brazil may be a great test market for the freestanding stores. Look at Apple stores. There's no reason other brands cannot capitalize on their own store fronts.

Rachel - interesting - wow and here I thought it was just the import taxes jacking up the prices!
