    Thanks - yeah it was er... interesting. I want my AC BACK! (The electricity is now fixed but not surprisingly that AC unit is on the fritz and needs repairing).

    Its really curious the way electrical appliances work - well, dont work for you. I lived in Brazil 30 years and never once faced this kind of problem. Perhaps this is something more peculiar to Rio? - I lived in Porto Alegre

    Marcello - I am told that there are a lot of electrical surges in Rio that are hard on appliances. So this could explain why you didn't have issues? Maybe the system is more stable there? I flew through Porto Allegre this week!
