This is Italian "fruitcake" and readily available in much of the U.S. I'm guessing it's all over Toronto too with the large Italian population there.

I love this stuff. I had my husband freeze one for when I get back to Brazil. It is great to make French toast out of.
It is made from a starter similar to sourdough which I think is was adds to the airy texture. I guess I think of it as Brazilian, but they definitely can't claim it - Italian all the way.

The chocolate kind IS good! And yes it is one of many Italian food items Brazilians have adopted as almost their own. But who can blame them?

but boy was I wrong about #2. I had some Panetone the other day and it is delicious. Not like North American fruitcake at all. It's light, airy, delicious. Try some!
