I've been noticing that there are more and more SUV's on the road lately so I thought I'd do a bit of research on the subject. According to Bloomberg, sales of SUVs in Brazil increased 55% in the first 8 months of 2008. In the same period, sales declined 19% in the US.
The two most popular SUVs in Brazil are the Ford Eco-Sport and the Hyundai Tuscon (which is three times the price in Brazil as in the US). Why? Import taxes. Interestingly enough, the article says that although Hyundai plans to start building the popular vehicle in Brazil to avoid the taxes, it does not plan to change the price...
Final insult to injury - if one were to import a car, they would not be able to legally sell it in Brazil unless it was 30 years old or more.
