    Necessary?? No, not technically. You CAN live in a foreign country with minimal understanding of the langueage. But WHY would you want to?? Besides simply being more a part of where you are and developing friendships there, there is a lot of interesting literature in Portuguese (and many times it is through literature that one most understands a place).

    True it is not necessary in general. But for me it is. Although I am definitely not reading literature, you go girl!

    I think it's really rude to live in a foreign country and not try to learn the language. And also, really really dumb.

    I know people who do it (they have drivers who are with them all the time who speak English) but I don't think they are as fulfilled in the expat experience doing it this way.
