    Try "City of Men"

If you saw city of god, it's similar content. The series has about 20 episodes I think, and it's not only interesting but a great insight into brazillian culture. I am in the same boat as you trying to learn portuguese through film :) I am living in gavea, trying to short track my language aptitude :)

I agree with all that's been said so far.

I was hooked on the last Novela das 8. Even though it was absolute crap TV, I learned a lot. The Novela das 7 is easier to follow and usually has simpler dialogue. I promised myself I wouldn't start watching the latest novelas, as my excuse of "It helps me learn Portuguese" is no longer viable in my boyfriends' eyes...

Os Normais is a good one, very funny and you should also check out the movie by the same name. Personally my favorite is A Grande Familia, which also has a movie by the same name.

If you want anymore movie recommendations, I can pass many on--I work in a Portuguese school and the teachers show weekly movies. Put on the Portuguese subtitles to read while you watch (but remember that because of space, subtitles don't always put things word-for-word)

Os Normais isn't a Novela...it's a Sitcom. It's very, very funny...Fernanda Torres and Luiz Fernando Guimarães are excellent. Guimarães' follow-up series Minha Nada Mole Vida is also pretty funny too.

The Drama series Cidade dos Homens, which 2 other people have suggested is my favorite Brazilian TV show. It is excellent! They also recently made a theatrical film that ends the series. Fernando Meirelles, famed director of City of God was an executive producer of the series. He also produced another good show on Globo called Antonia, which is based on the film of the same name by Tata Amara.
As far as the Novelas that come on 6 days a week are concerned Senhora do Destino and Começar de Novo were really good.

Wow nothing gets people talking like TV it seems!

Thanks Lance, I will definitely watch City of Men. The girls from Canada who are staying with me have seen it and recommend it as well.

Zoe - thanks for the additional recommendations and yes, any more that you can pass on would be great!

Will - thanks for the clarification about Os Normais not being a novela. And of course for the additional recommendations...

I am looking forward to watching them all - I hope to be a Portugese machine!

Now, does anyone know where I can get ahold of transcripts of these shows? I figure it could help me as well. Thanks!

I also recommend Cidade dos Homens and you can get it on DVD. Good tip about putting on Portuguese subtitles while you watch, it really helps. While I like the "heavy" Brazilian movies (Cidade de Deus, Carandiru, Tropa de Elite, etc), not all good Brazilian movies are violent. While most of the comedies are very Globoseque, try something like Lisbela e o Prisioneiro or Caramuru, which are funny and good.

I find watching the 8 o clock Brazilian news on Globo is a good start. The anchorman speaks very clearly and as it is current events, you can get the context through the film footage. Once they start talking about politics, even Brazilians get confused..Novellas were my first Portuguese lessons and if i speak Portuguese with a Sao PAulo accent, its Tarciso Meiras fault.heheheh
