I have been a bit torn about whether to post about this or about any other "negative" experiences we have here in Brazil. I tend to get a bit of "flack" when I do...
Disclaimer: Yes, I realize service is not always good everywhere, no matter where in the world you are. But I am not really doing anyone a service in just talking about the positive experiences we have, and if I can prevent someone from having a less than great experience like we did, I will.
So my husband and I were really excited to go to Nirvana (located in the Jockey Clube) for massages. I had been there before to tour the facility (they also offer yoga classes and pilates, though I have not been as it is expensive - $R50 to drop in for yoga! I will stick to my yogamazing podcasts thanks - highly recommend these! - and catch a class here and there in Leblon or Ipanema) which is absolutely beautiful.
So we arrive to a warm welcome which included a lovely herb footspa and teas and cookies, nice spa environment. But our massages were honestly not good at all. I know what you are thinking - that little ex-pat princess is now complaining about massages, this has officially gone too far! How can a massage be bad? It just was.
I requested FIRM pressure and my massage therapist lightly "brushed" oil onto my skin with her fingers for the entire hour. It was more irritating than anything. (I get regular massages back home and go to physio, and haven't done either since arriving here so I was really excited to have someone work on the knots in my back.... no such luck). I could also hear loudspeaker announcements periodically from the nearby Jockey Clube, and the room was freezing cold. Since my husband has been stressed to the max working a lot lately, I hoped his experience was much better and that it was just an "off day" for my therapist. Nope. Mr. DRL had a massage therapist who was coming down with a cold or something and kept "snortling" (check my entry on manners for a definition) and coughing and sneezing, all during the massage... which also was not very good.
We were disappointed, I really wanted to like the place, truly I did...
So much for a "happy ending!"
Well one thing didn't change, I am still not so much of a English writer.
