After arriving in Rio and once the house hunting began, we soon realized there was a good chance that finding an appropriate furnished apartment or apartamento, may not be in the cards. Many of the places we liked were unfurnished, as is the place we ended up renting. The idea of furnishing a large apartment virtually from scratch in a foreign country is overwhelming, however, I must say one thing that makes it better is that we will not need to purchase much in terms of bedroom furniture for our three bedrooms.
Why?
Because the CLOSETS ARE MONEY! Brazilians do it better, I must say. Virtually every apartment we looked at had beautifully done, built-in closets with shelving, drawers, some have windows and sitting areas... it is crazy! Brazilians don't like clutter, everything must be put away. It's much easier to maintain with closet space like this! Some photos for you to see for yourself...
Note: the closets in the first four photos are in the regular bedrooms, not the master suite. Although many Brazilian apartments have more than one suite, there seems to always be a discernible master suite. Some even have desks and floating shelves built in too! The bottom two are from master suites of some apartments.
I think that North America has something to learn from the Brazilians - how to maximize and beautify closet space. Everything is beautiful here, why not the closets too?
