Public Transportation in Brazil
My husband likes the joke expression; "They say there's always one weirdo on the bus, but I've never seen him..."
I forgot to mention in my "walking tour of Centro" post that we took public transportation downtown that day. This is something that I do not normally do back home even, so I was a bit apprehensive about doing it here! But now no one can call me an expat princess! And it was actually fine, great even. We took a bus from Leblon to Copacabana then took the Metro down to Centro. Honestly it is nicer than back home. That said, I have seen many buses so full that people's faces are smooshed against windows since I've been here so I think it was also a matter of time of day that made our ride so pleasant. Nevertheless, I must say it's quick, efficient, cheap and seemed perfectly safe to me.
Making Rio's metro even safer for women these days are some female-only cars on the subway. Apparently these pink striped subway cars are the city's answer to women complaining about sexual harassment on the Metro. And now some people are calling it an election-year stunt the city is pulling and calling it segregation. There are reportedly men who claim to ride in the "pink cars" everyday and people who think that this is a misuse of resources... and then there are many women who are happily enjoying riding in these cars grope-free. What do you think about the women-only subway cars in Rio?
